Russia to help Iran space program

SPACE TOURISM INDONESIA --  Two Russian space companies have signed a cooperation agreement with an Iranian corporation, clearing the way for the creation of an Iranian satellite observation system.

According to the signed agreement, Russian companies will help Iran to create its own remote-sensing system which is used for gathering information about the Earth's surface, atmosphere and oceans.

Aviation veteran Habibie ready to look to the skies again

Former president B.J. Habibie’s concerns over the sluggish development of Indonesia’s hi-tech industries, especially aeronautics, have apparently been partly answered after he said he would be entering the aviation business once again.

On Friday Habibie said he would join PT Regio Aviasi Industri (RAI), a merger between PT Ilhabi Rekatama and PT Eagle Capital. “The project is to revive the N-250 plane,” Habibie said after attending the 17th National Technology Awakening Day at Gedung Sate in Bandung, West Java. The N-250 turboprop aircraft, or Nusantara 250, was manufactured formerly by state-owned aircraft company PT IPTN, now PT Dirgantara Indonesia (PT DI). It conducted its maiden flight on Aug. 10, 1995, and its test flights were successful. Habibie was very proud of the success of IPTN in designing the N-250 turboprop 18 years ago, which he claimed was 100 percent made in Indonesia and engineered by Indonesian experts.

 According to him, in 1998 Indonesia came close to getting the plane certified airworthy by US and European regulators. The N-250 development project, however, was halted when the government discontinued funding on the orders of the International Monetary Fund in 1998. The majority stake (51 percent) at PT RAI is held by PT Ilhabi Rekatama, owned by Habibie’s son Ilham Habibie. The remaining shares are owned by the business group of Erry Firmansyah, former managing director of the Indonesia Stock Exchange (BEI). The memorandum of understanding (MoU) to establish PT RAI will be carried out on Aug. 11. Habibie said he would serve as chief commissioner of the company. “Tomorrow, I will sign the MoU at the home in Kuningan, Jakarta,” said Habibie.

 The private company is established to continue producing the N-250 aircraft, which has yet to obtain a license from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), the United States aviation authority and the oldest authority in the world. “We expect to secure the FAA license in the next two years,” said Habibie on Friday. Habibie said that he would utilize all his networks, both inside and outside the country, to achieve his dream. When asked whether he would be involved directly in manufacturing the plane, Habibie said he would only guide the process. “I’m already 76 years old. I was engaged directly when I was younger, but not now. I leave it to my son and grandchildren. But one thing’s for sure, Habibie’s experience cannot be acquired from the books,” he said.

 With regards to that, he asked the Applied Technology and Research Agency (BPPT), PT DI, Technology and Science Research Center and higher learning institutes to revitalize the project. Habibie said the aircraft had gone through research and development since 1985. Studies from research institutions in Europe and North America in the fields of aviation, aerodynamics, aeroelastics, light-weight construction, engineering, propulsion, electronics, avionics, production and quality control have been developed at research institutions in Indonesia. Separately, PT DI Technology and Development director Dita Ardonni Jafri confirmed an initial study to produce the aircraft with Ilham Habibie’s business group. “Ilham’s group is working on it. PT DI is not much involved,” he said.

SMK Penerbangan Antariksa Madiun Mendidik Calon Astronot

Wahana antariksa merupakan sebuah kendaraan yang mengudara melalui angkasa. Yang disebut wahana antariksa termasuk probe angkasa robot atau tak berawak dan juga kendaraan berawak. Istilah ini kadangkala juga digunakan untuk menjelaskan satelit buatan, yang memiliki kriteria rancangan yang mirip.

Pendidikan, Lapangan kerja, pengangguran, adalah problem besar di Indonesia, masih rendahnya mutu pendidikan ditambah susahnya mencari pekerjaan, kemiskinan, sedikitnya lowongan kerja yang tersedia, menjadi persoalan yang harus menjadi tugas pemerintah untuk mengambil langkah cepat untuk menyiapkan tenaga kerja siap pakai seperti SMK Bisa, SMK Mandiri, SMK yang lulusannya berkualitas dan siap kerja.

Sekolah Menengah Kejuruan harus disiapkan untuk mengisi lowongan kerja tingkat menengah yang sudah tersedia, selain itu pemerintah harus juga mendorong terciptanya peluang kerja baru yang bisa menampung siswa lulusan SMK baik lewat program pegawai negeri, mendorong perusahaan baru, mendukung UKM, UMKM, melatih dan mendorong wirausaha baru, entrepreneur baru, pabrik ramah lingkungan baru, Perusahaan Baru, kesempatan kerja baru.

Tidak mudah memang menyiapkan tenaga kerja siap pakai, siap kerja, namun upaya departemen pendidikan dalam hal ini Direktoran Pembinaan Pendidikan Kejuruan Direktorean Jenderal Menajemen Pendidikan dasar dan Menengah Departemen Pendidikan Nasional (dit-PSMK) bisa melakukan pembinaan untuk program SMK bisa menurut pengamatan saya adalah langkah tepat terutama terkait dengan banyaknya pengangguran elite, pengangguran dari Lulusan Perguruan Tinggi, pengangguran yang disebakan oleh banyaknya tenaga kerja lulusan perguruan tinggi yang ternyata tidak siap pakai.

Program program SMK bisa harus benar benar bisa link dan match dengan kebutuhan pasar kerja, lebih lebih kalau juga bisa disiapkan untuk mendukung pasar kerja luar negeri yang terampil, bukan hanya sebagai pembantu rumah tangga PRT seperti TKI selama ini.

Another SLV Rocket From Lapan

Indonesia's space agency, LAPAN, unveils its first prototype of satellite launch vehicle (SLV) or RPS (Roket Pembawa Satelit) in Indo-Defence, Indo Aerospace, and Indo Marine 2010 exhibition (IDAM 2010).

The exhibition arranged by The ministry of defense is part of Indonesia's effort to explore outer space for the benefit of human kind, especially, Indonesians. The exhibition occurred in 10-13 November 2010 in JIEXPO Kemayoran, Jakarta.

LAPAN rockets are classified "RX" (Roket Eksperimental) followed by the diameter in millimeters. For example, the RX-100 has a diameter of 100 mm. LAPAN's current workhouse rocket propulsion system consists of four stages, namely the three-stage RX 420 and the RX-320 level. It is planned to use the RX-420 as a booster (rocket booster) RPS for the planned Roket Pengorbit Satelit ("Orbital Satellite Rocket") planned to fly in 2014. In 2008 optimistic hopes were that this rocket,. known as SLV (Satellite Launch Vehicle) would first be launched in Indonesia to 2012, and if there were extra funds pursuant to the good economic situation of 2007-8, possibly the year 2010. In fact, the LAPAN budget for 2008 and 2007 was Rp 200 billion (approximately USD $20million). Budgetary issues surrounding the international credit crises of 2008-2009 placed many Indonesian technical projects in jeopardy most especially the complete development of RX-420 and associated micro-satellite program to world-class standards ahead of project finalization schedule and the opportunity to work together with the world institutions. LAPAN hopes to be an educating partner with Indian Aerospace in sciences related to satellite.

At November 11, 2010, LAPAN spokesman said the RX-550 rocket would undergo a static test in December this year and a flight test in 2012. The rocket will consist of four stages, will be part of an RPS-01 rocket to put a satellite in orbit. Before, the Polar LAPAN-TUBSAT (LAPAN-A1) satellite created in cooperation with Germany was successfully placed in orbit and until now still functioning well. The aim is to have home-made rockets and satellites.

LAPAN has re-established and rejuvenated Indonesian expertise in rocket and missile based weapons systems in cooperation with the TNI AL [Armed Forces of Indonesia] began in 2005. In April 2008, Indonesian TNI began a new missile research program alongside LAPAN. Prior to this, eight projects were sponsored by the TNI in Malacca monitoring with satellite remote LAPAN-TUBSat, most especially the theft of timber and alleged encroachment on Indonesian territorial waters in the 2009 escalation over Malaysia's claims to the huge gas fields off Ambalat-island.

Indonesia to build bio-pharmaceutical Center in Karanganyar

The research and technology ministry is sponsoring the formation of a bio-pharmaceutical center in Karanganyar district, Central Java, to improve the cultivation and post-harvest products of local farmers.

"We encourage efforts to set up a center of innovation in the region as a manifestation of the Regional Innovation System (Sida)," Research and Technology Minister Suharna Surapranata said here Monday.

The creation of such a center in Karanganyar was in accordance with the local potentials which indeed had long been known to produce traditional herbal raw materials like ginger, turmeric, black wild ginger, kencur (Kaempferia galanga) and others, the minister said.

The ministry of research and technology was making various prototypes of equipment according to the needs of the local people, such as a chopper and battering dryers (a powder) which is then expected to be developed by the local community.

Meanwhile, the vice chairman of Karanganyar Cluster Medicinal, Budi Suyatno said he was confident with a variety of equipments brought by ministry of research and technology to Karanganyar that would improve the quality and the quantity of the production of the local farmers.

"If the first, the farmer group of Karanganyar produced about ten tonnes of ginger per month, two tons of crude drug and 1 quintal ginger powder per month. I guarantee with these tools they can produce one ton of crude and one quintal of ginger powder, ginger, turmeric per day and the other materials," he noted.

Budi hoped, through the regional innovation system (Sida), six of the 17 districts in Karanganyar district as the the medicinal producer could have a better bargaining position in selling products to the factory.

The other clusters in Central Java province, which are also developed by the ministry includes knalpot-sapu glagah cluster in Purbalingga district, potato cluster in Banjarnegara district, in Wonogiri district.

In addition, there are also Jepara peanut cluster, Salatiga cluster processed food, Klaten metal clusters and Surakarta city cluster development of science and technology park and Banyumas district waste-water treatment cluster.

Scientists create zero gravity on Earth for astronauts training

Glass becomes completely spherical in an anti-gravity device developed by a research team from Tohoku University and a government research institute in Osaka Prefecture.

A joint governmental research team has developed a device that can create an artificial gravity-free state using strong magnets, researchers said Wednesday.

The experimental device was developed jointly by Tohoku University's research institute on metal materials in Sendai and the Government Industrial Research Institute, Osaka, an affiliate of the Ministry of International Trade and Industry, in Ikeda, Osaka Prefecture.

The device is expected to enable experiments in a weightless state, now possible only in space, to be conducted on Earth.

Specifically, researchers say they hope that the device can be used to develop new materials, noting that the structure of matter often changes when it hardens after being melted in a state of weightlessness.

Furthermore, if substances are melted while floating in a gravity-free state, they become perfectly spherical and do not mix with impurities stuck to the inner wall of the container nor harden when the temperature is lowered beyond their melting points.

Therefore, such experiments in a gravity-free state are expected to lead to the production of glass of high purity and the development of new materials. Such experiments are often conducted on space-shuttle missions. However, space experiments are very expensive and can only be conducted by astronauts.

According to the research team, the experimental device comprises a superconducting magnet 400,000 times as powerful as the Earth's magnetism and a carbon dioxide (CO2) laser.

In developing the device, the team worked with a law stating that so-called diamagnetic substances (such as glass, water and most organic compounds), if placed in a magnetic field, become slightly magnetized and display repulsion force in the opposite direction to the magnetic field.

The device places a substance in a magnetic field so strong that the substance's repulsion force against the field is equal to natural gravity, thereby creating a state of zero gravity. The CO2 laser is used to heat the floating substance above 1,000 degrees Celsius and melt it to make it perfectly spherical.
